Shalom Delhi is a project that cares for people and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Its services are comprehensive providing medical, psycho-social and livelihood support via its hospital, home based care and community programmes. Through its patient-centered, compassionate and high-quality services, Shalom is providing much needed care for some of the most marginalised and under-served groups of people in Delhi society. Our focus is to help with providing financial support to Shalom Delhi for its Livelihood Programme, the Kiran project. This provides a workplace where ladies can learn to sew and tailor before producing garments and other products for sale. In return they receive a regular salary payment with which they can support their families. A significant part of the running costs of Kiran is covered by income from sales. The founder, who was instrumental in setting up Shalom Delhi, understood that ladies living with HIV/AIDS coped far better with their illness if they had the opportunity to work and earn to support their families. Shalom Delhi, which operates under the umbrella of the Emmanuel Hospital Association, is now led by another doctor who worked alongside the founder for a long number of years and specialises in the care and rehabilitation of those suffering from HIV/AIDS. She is totally committed to this ministry and is an inspiring example of someone who is giving themselves to the needs of the poorest of the poor. India is reputed to have the highest number of HIV/AIDS sufferers in the world and the project that she is overseeing is addressing the significant variety of challenges that this disease brings. |
