The Echoes of Mercy primary school has a roll of 510 children with pre-school and primary classes up to Grade 8 when pupils sit a national exam to secure entry to secondary school.
In common with all other Kenyan primary schools, the school is currently teaching two curriculums. The new curriculum, which has been introduced by the Kenyan government and is taught up to Grade 6, provides for task based rather than rote learning and includes teaching on practical and life skills. Grades 7 and 8 continue to be taught following the old curriculum. In terms of exam performance, the school continues to go from strength to strength with increasing numbers securing places at national secondary schools. Those who attend national schools will almost certainly go on to attend university.
At a recent visit the team were particularly struck both by the joyful vibe which existed among the school children who seemed to be enjoying life at school and also by the outstanding quality of the children’s spoken English. In summary, the progress made in this school in the relatively few years of its existence has been quite outstanding and is a tribute to the leader, Moses Omondi, and also the head teacher and staff.
