The scheme began in 2013 when the ladies of the village came together to begin an economic initiative that would generate some income for their families. The scheme aims to empower women, reduce poverty and bring a sense of self-worth to the members. The 54 members are mostly widows. Loans range in amount from £50 to £320 and are repayable within one year along with 5% interest.

Microloan projects have proved to be a very effective way of improving the life quality of families in the developing world. A key to success is experienced and positive leadership to oversee the project and train the members. Betty, who is also the Chief Operating Officer for the Echoes of Mercy Mission School, and Emily, the wife of Moses Omondi who is the project leader of Echoes of Mercy Mission, oversee the operation of this micro loan scheme. Both Betty and Emily are committed to the village where the project is run.

During the covid related lockdown period a piece of land for farming and two cows were purchased and these are owned by the scheme. With local markets closed opportunities for trading were highly restricted. This was a practical and farsighted initiative which not only helped the community of widows and their families, but also the wider Echoes of Mercy Mission community.
