Royal Christian School, Kisumu

children at school in Kenya

Patrick Onyango Odera, with his wife Caroline, established this school in 2013. Patrick is one of the key church leaders in Kenya and is the director of the project. Caroline is the head teacher and has qualifications in both education and business management. The school is overseen by Caroline, who spends three days every week at the school. She is a skilled teacher, who provides cover when required, and it is evident that her leadership, drive and determination are key factors behind why this school does so well in such a poor area.

The numbers attending the school have increased to 184. The school has 11 classes, 3 preschool and Grades 1 to 8, and has 13 teachers and 3 non-teaching staff. In common with other Kenyan schools, Royal Christian School has embraced and is teaching the new curriculum. The number of pupils currently studying at Grade 8 is 14, which is very encouraging and an indication that the school is doing well.  Last year the school came third out of 22 schools in the Malanga zone area at Grade 8 exam level.

The leadership have shown real initiative in overseeing progress in this school development and we are pleased to have the opportunity of working with them on a programme that will transform the possibilities for the lives of the children attending. There is a clear link between the local church and the school which brings a spiritual dimension to the education process.
