Makwati School started in 2010 and is overseen by Operation Mobilisation. It has grown steadily and has now 360 students from kindergarten to Grade 7. Daily meals of porridge or Nshima are provided for the children. There are 11 teachers, only two of whom are qualified. The other teachers are studying at college during the school breaks to achieve qualification. Up to Grade 4, the children are taught in Bemba with English being used in the upper grades. Shared Hope is involved in all aspects of the financial requirements of running the school and as the numbers increase on an annual basis, so the financial demands increase for the provision of things like school equipment, books, teachers’ salaries and food. There is now in place a structure that will enable the development of education in this very needy area at a level that will empower the children who are at the school to have the opportunity to transform their futures in a way that was impossible before this initiative developed.
