This is a school in a remote rural area, about 2 hours drive from Dehradun. The Jaunsari tribe number around 120,000. They have their own language, but are illiterate, and their children do not attend schools. Over several years, a team led by Sam Thomas has been working at producing books which can be used for teaching Jaunsari children. To do this they have matched Jaunsari sounds to Hindi sounds and letters and a book has now been produced which is being used for teaching. A school has been established in one of the Jaunsari villages and is growing in numbers with 48 children, aged 3-8 now attending. The school has a staff of 6 teachers and does a remarkable job in a very challenging area, to give the children an opportunity to learn and prepare them for living and potentially working one day, in the wider world. A committed couple moved to Dehradun, North India in 1986, Since then they have been involved in holistic Christian ministry where they have been totally committed to their local church while developing a variety of social projects within the community. They have a real heart for the needs of those around them, especially those living in poverty in the north of India, which is far less economically developed than the south. Although India is a fast-developing global economic power, around 40% of the poorest people in the world live there.
